Police shootings, suicide, and domestic violence all impact Native peoples at extremely high rates. They need to be included in the conversation on gun control.

says that 19% of reported domestic violence cases committed against all women in the U.S. involve a weapon, and the presence of a gun in these situations increases the risk of homicide by almost 500%. Among all other women in the U.S., Native women are the second-most likely to die from homicide of any kind, according toWhite people often say to me, “If it’s that bad, why don’t you just leave?” Well, imagine being so poor that leaving isn’t an option.

We live in these conditions — facing major threats to different modes of gun violence — because of deep inequalities that. There are racial aspects to these problems that cannot be ignored. Sometimes when I tell people I’m Native, they’re actually shocked, because they truly believe that we’re already extinct!

Many of the statistics referenced in this article are getting worse as the years go on, not better. That’s why it's important for Natives to speak up and educate those who are ignorant and unaware of the issues that we have always faced and still face in 2018, like gun violence. It’s also important for non-Natives to open their hearts and minds and take active steps to learn about and understand the harsh realities of reservation life and their many racially-biased causes.

Native Americans are consistently left out of the conversations about what is happening within the U.S., including the issues that affect us most, like gun violence. But the more we have these conversations about the complexities of gun violence on reservations — and take them seriously, without media blackouts on Native issues — the sooner we can start to heal our Nations.
