We don’t need numbers to understand that Watson was, at one point, a much better quarterback than Mayfield. But here’s a reminder: He’s made three Pro Bowls to Mayfield’s zero. And During Watson’s worst statistical season with the Texans , he posted a higher completion percentage , quarterback rating and average depth of target than Mayfield posted during his best season with Cleveland .
Five draft picks and almost a quarter billion dollars later, Watson looks worse than either quarterback ever has. The Browns are asking for patience on Watson’s return to form. Perhaps his unique layover requires a unique readjustment period. But the fans aren’t asking for much in return. Forget Pro Bowls. How about progress, of which Watson isn’t showing a ton after posting two of his four worst Cleveland quarterback ratings in the last two weeks. Or proficiency, which would be good enough to win this season alongside a dominant defense and pricey offensive line.And eight games later, potential is still his best trait. Watson may fulfill it eventually, but his fans are growing impatient.
