— a procedure to remove both of my breasts. I really don’t have words for how out of body that moment felt. I’d never been to the hospital for anything — not so much as a sprained ankle. Everything about my diagnosis was beyond my comprehension. It wasn’t like I could go to one of my friends, or even a family member and say, “hey girl, how did you deal?” I didn’t even know it was possible that a teen could get breast cancer.
I know this sounds funny or cliché, but at 16 years old, there were many reasons I was not ready for a double mastectomy, but at the top of the list was. At the time of my diagnosis, I was looking forward to prom — I was so excited. In my mind, I felt like I needed breasts to go to the prom. So after a lot of prayer, and a lot of being smart and listening to my doctor’s advice, I asked for a partial mastectomy of the left breast.
But my fears and insecurities following my diagnosis also propelled me. Ever since I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 16, I've been super driven to see how much I can accomplish. I became the first person on either side of my family to go away to college and graduate college. I even went on to start my PhD, a program I’m currently completing. As my grades before my diagnosis would tell you, I never would have gone this route if it wasn’t for the experience I had.
