Officials say that beachgoers should know how to escape a rip current and to always keep an eye on the state of the ocean when swimming.
“There are people out there in rip currents. So, I quickly grabbed my board and ran towards the rip currents,” Turner told. “A 17-year-old and probably a 45-year-old out there in the water. And they were out of energy.”
Enzor said he didn’t know how to get out of the rip current since he didn’t grow up going to the beach. “The biggest thing that you can do is not panic. If you’re not a strong swimmer, if you can just float, a lot of times rip current will, once it pops you out, you’ll be able to either traverse along the shoreline and ease your way back in. Get hold of somebody and have them call 911 so you can get the help there,” Grendze said.
