Tony Timpa's 15-year-old son, Kolton, testified before his family rested their case in the lawsuit accusing a Dallas officer of excessive force and three...

AdvertisementMedical science took center stage in the first week of the long-awaited trial. The Timpas’ attorneys have said Timpa died of positional asphyxia — when people can’t breathe because of their position. Dr. Martin Tobin, a world-renowned pulmonologist, testified on Wednesday, which caused damage to his brain and heart. Timpa’s breastbone couldn’t expand as officers pressed him against the hard ground, Tobin said, so he couldn’t breathe.

He said with five officers, police had more than enough resources to control Timpa and his handcuffs put law enforcement at an “incredible advantage.” He said someone should’ve rolled Timpa on his side. How Tony Timpa lived He said his father was his best friend, and it was a comfort to play video games at home with him because he didn’t have many friends at school. “We went to the water parks, played video games and he gave me all the food I wanted,” he said, as his relatives and others in the courtroom laughed.

“The pain I’ve seen my son go through every day for the past seven years has been horrible,” she told the jury.John Cheves Ligon, one of the officers’ attorneys, questioned Timpa’s father and stepmother about Timpa’s drug and alcohol use and whether he’d kept it hidden. “I don’t think these officers should be casting stones,” Kim Timpa said. “Their behavior was horrible.”Timpa’s mother, Vicki Timpa has been vocal about her search for answers. Friday on the witness stand, she recalled memory after memory as jurors looked at family photographs of her son. His fiery red hair, the hat she made him wear because of persistent ear infections as a child, the flowers he picked for her, his love of jet skiing.

She hugged herself on the witness stand, remembering the last hug she shared with him. July 23, 2016, she said. It was cheek-to-cheek and lasted a long time, and afterwards, Tony rang a bell outside her home, like he always did when it was a good visit.
