‘I’m white and I’m skinny and I pass’: Trans actress, 'Euphoria' breakout star Hunter Schafer acknowledges her privilege within the LGBTQ community hunters
HBO’s hottest new series, Euphoria, debuted just over one month ago, and already one of its characters, Jules, is being recognized as one of the most interesting portrayals of a trans person on television to date. But the blond-haired, blue-eyed model behind the character, Hunter Schafer, won’t neglect to acknowledge her privilege when being recognized as such.
“It kind of just kept going, and then a month or two later I’m in the final audition with a bunch of HBO execs in L.A.,” Schafer explained, “and I found out later that day that I was gonna be playing Jules.” “Sam was incredibly talented and empathetic, and had an understanding of all of his characters, in a way that I wouldn’t have necessarily expected from a white cis guy,” she said. “And then, once I got the role, the first thing we did, they kept me in L.A. a few extra days just so that Sam and I could have a meeting that went hours long.”
