We spoke to 19 workers from every corner of the industry — from actors to writers to camera operators. They shared their salaries, their meager residuals, and what they’ve been doing to survive during the strike
that’s been coming out about his shows shooting through the strike. One reason the the show continued shooting when everything else shut down is because so many of the workers on my job crossed the picket lines. The majority of the crew didn’t care or feel like it pertained to them. It’s not a mistake that this is the crew that works for that particular production — it goes up the ladder.
There is a huge above-the-line–below-the-line divide within the industry, and it’s one of the biggest problems standing against solidarity. The feeling that the above-the-lines don’t care about us and would sell us out in a second if given a chance — it’s strong. Philosophically, crossing a picket line is against who I am as a person, but it’s difficult even for me to not feel the same way. And it’s based on behavior we’ve seen on set over the years. The way we’re dismissed and talked about.
