The coronavirus crisis is taking a serious toll on New York's first responders. One paramedic says she's started sleeping with her bedroom light on. 'I hear the cries,' she says. 'I hear the agony of people suffocating, trying to breathe.'

New York City Fire Department paramedic Elizabeth Bonilla says she's been having a hard time sleeping in the dark since the coronavirus outbreak began.New York City Fire Department paramedic Elizabeth Bonilla says she's been having a hard time sleeping in the dark since the coronavirus outbreak began. For weeks, first responders have been racing across New York City to try to save lives in the national epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic.

Responding to calls, Bonilla said, feels like coming face to face with a monster that's overtaken a patient's body. This month, the number of emergency calls has fallen, but Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city's emergency medical service still needs the extra support from all of the ambulances, as well as out-of-state paramedics and EMTs, that FEMA has sent — and will need them through the end of May.

"We were already understaffed to begin with, but now we have more people out sick and we have an increase in the call volume," Variale said."This is a recipe for disaster." "I had that anxiety in me," he said."What if I don't make it through the next day? So I was trying to prepare for the worst.""I'm kind of upset that I'm sick because I want to be out there," Goepfert said."It's our time to shine and prove to the city that our services are much needed."
