at a Hurst apartment was sentenced on Wednesday to 40 years in prison, the Tarrant County district attorney’s office announced in a news release.
Shortly after 8:47 a.m. Jan. 25, 2021, officers performed a welfare check at an apartment complex at the 600 block of Arcadia Street in Hurst, Texas, a city about 12 miles northeast of Fort Worth. Officers found the body of a woman, later identified as 65-year-old Laurel Schick, under a couch, the attorney’s office said.
The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office determined Schick died of “sharp and blunt force injuries” and ruled the death a homicide.Anthony Shaw Young, 45, pleaded guilty in February to a murder charge in connection with Schick’s death, the district attorney’s office said. He was arrested two days after Schick’s body was found, according to online court records. Young was at the Tarrant County jail Wednesday and his bail is $100,000.
One of Schick’s sons, Sam McElwee said during a sentencing hearing he had asked Young to keep his mother safe and drug free, the attorney’s office said. “You lied on both,” McElwee said, according to the Wednesday news release. “You took an old woman and used her ... beat the hell out of her.”.
