Ernesto continues on a forecast track that appears to be heading for Bermuda
Tropical Storm Ernesto has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane Wednesday, Aug. 14, with top sustained winds growing to 75 mph.Fueled by very warm water temperatures and low wind shear in the atmosphere, Ernesto could become even more intense in the next few days, possibly reaching major hurricane status with top winds as strong as 111 mph before the storm takes aim at Bermuda, forecasters said.
As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, the center of Hurricane Ernesto was spinning about 175 miles northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico and about 835 miles south-southwest of Bermuda. The storm system was moving northwest at a pace of 16 mph. Tropical Storm Ernesto has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane Wednesday, Aug. 14, with top sustained winds growing to 75 mph.Ernesto had strengthened into a tropical storm Monday evening and became the fifth named storm of the Atlantic 2024 hurricane season. It is not expected to have any direct impacts on the eastern United States, but some forecasters say Ernesto could bring dangerous seas and rip currents to the southeastern U.S. this week.
