LATEST: Dorian is now a Category 2 storm and is expected to approach the east coastline of Florida Tuesday night through Wednesday evening.
Hurricane Dorian, after hovering over the Bahamas for hours, started inching northwestward on Tuesday morning, and forecasters say the deadly storm will soon move"dangerously close" to Florida.
Dorian then came to a grinding halt on Monday morning and remained at a virtual standstill over Grand Bahama, the northernmost island of the Bahamas archipelago. "I think when the eye wall hit, we had 200-plus mile per hour winds that ripped everybody's roofs and destroyed everybody's structure and houses," Bruce Sawyer, a resident of the hard-hit Abaco Islands, told"GMA" on Monday.
University of Florida canceled classes for Tuesday and Wednesday and many Florida airports are shuttered as the storm moves in. Mandatory and voluntary evacuation orders have been issued for dozens of coastal communities from Florida to North Carolina.
