Two Huntsville organizations are opening warming centers with temperatures expected to drop into the single digits by the end of the week.
The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a Wind Chill Watch for all of north Alabama and southern Tennessee from 6 p.m. Thursday to noon on Saturday. Windchills could range from -5 to -15 degrees, raising the potential for frostbite and hypothermia.
A low of 7 degrees is expected Thursday night with a chance of snow showers. Strong winds could lead to power sporadic power outages, the weather service said. The high on Friday is only expected to reach 18 degrees with a low of 8 degrees. A high of 24 is forecasted for Saturday and 30 for Sunday. Weather permitting, Huntsville Police will be available to transport individuals to the warming centers. To request a ride, call HPD’s non-emergency phone number, 256-722-7100.
Huntsville Transit will also provide free rides to and from the warming centers. Transit will operate 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Dec. 22-23, and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Dec. 24. The department is closed on Sunday. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
