World War Z's originally planned ending may not have been as complete as Paramount wanted, but it could have saved the franchise's future.

World War Z's original ending, which was drastically different from the film's actual ending, could have saved the franchise's future. World War Z is loosely based on World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks. World War Z, starring Brad Pitt, came out in 2013 and enjoyed a healthy level of success. A sequel was initially planned until Paramount canceled it in 2019 for several logistical reasons, but Brad Pitt still hopes to make the sequel happen one day.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The original World War Z ending was deemed too abrupt and incomplete, so Paramount spent millions of dollars rewriting and shooting the final 40 minutes of the film. World War Z's original ending was much more similar to the book's ending, but Paramount felt that it would not be satisfactory to the audience, so it was ripped up and drastically rewritten.

World War Z's ending was far different, with Lane finding his way to a World Health Organization building, where he realizes the zombies will not attack someone already sick. This ending provides a neat way to defeat the zombies, making winning the war reasonably straightforward. This ending was well-received, and as a one-off movie, it gives a clean and hopeful end to the film. Unfortunately, its tidy finality also makes future installments difficult.

The Changed World War Z Ending Makes A Sequel More Difficult The main problem that World War Z's ending poses to potential sequels is that it seemingly solved the zombie problem. With the path to winning the war so clear and not overly difficult, it would be hard to make the sequel feel important. World War Z is still one of the best zombie movies, but if it had used a more open ending that did not solve the zombie problem, a sequel would feel like a necessity instead of a chore.

World War Z could still get a sequel. It is just going to be difficult to conceive. There is a lot left to be done in terms of actually ending the war, so it is not as if there would be no story to tell. The issue is that it feels like the problem the franchise was created to solve has already been resolved, making a potential sequel feel hollow.
