No matter what the duration of your maternity leave, there is no denying that this is valuable time — and you should strive to make the most of it before you return to the demands of work.
"The most important part of bonding is attunement," says couples and family therapist Tracy Ross, LCSW."This means letting your baby know you are an engaged, loving presence which 'gets them.' You don't have to be stress-free or get everything right the first time or the first 10 times. However, when you are with your baby, let them know you are paying attention. If they are expressing distress, use a soothing voice and loving touch.
The adjustment to being a parent can be stressful and exhausting. But, just like in the working world, if you don't take some time out for yourself, you could put yourself at risk of burnout. Overall, the best plan of action is to leave work at work as much as possible. It will still be there for you when maternity leave is over. And trying to align work calls and projects around a newborn's sleep and feeding schedule is hardly a recipe for success. Instead, take advantage of the precious, uninterrupted time you'll have with your child — something that will be a rarity later on.Priorities may understandably shift after becoming a mother.
"During my maternity leave, I used the late nights waiting for the baby to fall asleep to launch ten remote, short-term rentals across the country," says pediatric anesthesiologist Chiagozie Fawole. She also used the time to focus on growing, a service to help other doctors use their scarce time to make intelligent real estate investing decisions.
