How will Jalin Hyatt fit into Giants' WR corps as a rookie? NYGiants
is a wildcard. The Giants’ longest-tenured receiver, Shepard suffered a season-ending torn ACL versus the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3. When healthy, Shepard is capable of playing both inside and outside, although he’s been most effective when utilized in the slot. Given the Giants’ depth at that position, however, I expect Shepard to replace Hodgins outside if his availability holds up.
There’s no denying that Hyatt was extremely productive at Tennessee. He recorded 67 receptions for 1,267 yards and 15 touchdowns en route to becoming the first Volunteer to win the Biletnikoff Award. Hyatt was a crucial part of the overall success of Heupel’s offense, but it’s that same offense that prevented Hyatt from developing an NFL-ready skill set.
Heupel’s offense thrives on manufactured spacing. Hyatt saw a lot of free releases as a result and wasn’t tasked with running a complete NFL route tree. Hyatt’s vertical speed and ball skills are extremely intriguing, but almostHyatt may earn the occasional rep in the slot, particularly via pre-designed plays and manufactured touches. Additionally, a Giants offense that needs to stretch the field with more frequency in 2023 could utilize Hyatt’s deep speed on vertical go routes on the outside.
