TWR is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization comprised of motivated young adults and former foster youth. Their vision is to improve the lives of children in foster care by collaborating with individuals, companies and community partners to bring resources to foster youth.
The organization works with hundreds of foster agencies, social workers, CASA advocates and other partners to bring programs to foster youth across the nation. Its foundation has provided thousands of foster youth across the country with new bicycles, college supplies and sweet cases so that children do not have to travel from home-to-home with their belongings in a trash bag.
Dahlia, back in college, was introduced to a small group that was volunteering building bikes at a local home. At the time, TWR was just a campus club, not an organization. Initially, she studied journalism and media relations to set her on the path to becoming a broadcaster. However, after interning at marketing and events companies and being introduced to TWR, she knew she could help the founder, Danny Mendoza, grow the club into an organization.
With their social media presence growing, TWR began attracting corporate partners, which allowed them to start making payroll. Also, the organization signed on a plethora of interns to help with its social media campaigns. Dahlia and her team would only post positive stories about kids in foster care and started posting pictures of kids on their adoption days. Her and Mendoza then asked themselves how they could become more sustainable and provide resources to the kids. “One of the things that we found out was kids who are entering foster care are given a trash bag to put their belongings in,” she continues. “That was an easy fix.
