Daniel Cormier defends his UFC heavyweight title against ex-champ Stipe Miocic in the main event of Saturday's UFC 241 pay-per-view card, which streams on ESPN+.
. The punch dropped Miocic to the mat. A few ground strikes followed before the referee rushed in to wave off the fight. Cormier claimed the heavyweight crown with a knockout at 4:33 of the first stanza.
Miocic had won that belt in May 2016 with a first-round knockout win over Fabricio Werdum. After he finished the fight, Miocic leaped over the cage. He was immediately set upon by his team and could be heard shouting in his trademark gravelly voice, “I’m the world champ! I’m the world champ.” Over the next 20 months, Miocic defended that title three times. He scored wins over Alistair Overeem, Junior dos Santos and Francis Ngannou.
Cormier ended that run in the main event of UFC 226 and Miocic has not fought since that setback. Cormier, who has never lost a round as a heavyweight fighter, defended his title in November with a second-round submission win over Derrick Lewis. But the champ, who turned 40 in March, is unsure if he will retire if he defeats Miocic again on Saturday.UFC 241 takes place Saturday, August 17 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
