How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World almost brought back a past villain, but the plot line never happened because of Steven Spielberg.

Closing out DreamWorks' trilogy, one key aspect of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World's tale was almost significantly different, which could have disrupted the overall story arc had Steven Spielberg not stepped in. Despite how difficult it is for a three-film series to maintain a strong narrative throughout, the How to Train Your Dragon movies' final installment managed to tie up loose ends and explore mysteries established in the first installment.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Hidden World introduced Grimmel the Grisly, a merciless dragon hunter who had nearly driven the Night Furies to extinction, as the ultimate antagonist of the franchise. His presence set the stage for Toothless to create a new line of Night Furies, which paralleled Hiccup's responsibilities as the Chief of Berk and the pressure he faced to start a family with Astrid.

Steven Spielberg Cut How To Train Your Dragon's Returning Villain The original idea for How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World was to bring back the villain Drago Bludvist, who was meant to survive the battle at the end of the second film. Drago would have washed up on a seemingly deserted island, where he would have encountered an aggressive and territorial dragon. To escape the island, he would have needed to find a way to befriend the dragon.

Why Steven Spielberg Was Involved In How To Train Your Dragon In 1994, Steven Spielberg, along with Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, founded DreamWorks SKG, which was the company behind How to Train Your Dragon. In 2016, the trio sold the company to Comcast, who also owns NBCUniversal and Universal Studios, for $3.8 billion. Despite the sale, Spielberg remained involved with DreamWorks projects and served as a consultant for How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

At the Animation Dingle 2017 keynote event, DeBlois recounted Spielberg's reaction to the third version of the script, where he said, "I cannot believe what I just read...It's a complete unqualified classic and better than the original. I've never witnessed this kind of transformation from the last two drafts I read to this one.
