I'm the designer behind Katy Perry's, SZA's, and Doja Cat's flower garments. Here's how I landed celebrity clients.
Alpaugh spoke with Insider about pivoting careers, landing celebrity clients, and diversifying a business in a crowded market. The conversation has been slightly edited for length and clarity. I've always been an artist. I was coloring on the kitchen floor before I could walk. It's ingrained in who I am, but I never thought it was a viable career option.
My boss asked me a question that changed my life:"What would you do if you never had to work another day?"Kristen Alpaugh designing Irithurium.At the time, I didn't know anything about flowers. But I wanted to strike the right marriage of meeting a need and using my creative skill set. So I set up meetings with vendors and floral experts, and started experimenting with the flowers and combinations those people told me about.
Florals are especially interesting because one arrangement takes so many hours to do, but you can't make a living off a few large projects. I needed a way to sustain myself while continuing to do what I loved. Irithurium is a patent-pending formula that I created, directly inspired by Katy's love for iridescence. The formula turns regular flowers shimmery and doubles their life span.
