Rather than recast Boseman’s role as King T’Challa, who is also the superhero Black Panther, writer-directorand the production team chose to honor Boseman’s memory by incorporating his death into the storyline of the new film. Most of the main cast members from the original return, including Nyong’o as Nakia, T’Challa’s girlfriend and Wakandan central intelligence agent;as T’Challa’s mother, Queen Ramonda; andas M’Baku, the leader of the Wakandan Jabari Tribe.

“After a deep tragedy, it’s important to find hope and our film explores that,” Nyong’o said. “When someone passes away, it has an effect on everyone, and Ryan has written a story that is extremely honest. We see how all the characters deal with T’Challa’s death and grieve in different ways. Nakia is a little bit more advanced in the stages of grief than other characters and even more than I was when I made this film.
