How some 2020 presidential candidates are planning to fix the gender pay gap:
Harvard economics professor Claudia Goldin stressed that though candidates’ plans are well-intentioned, there is no “quick fix” to close the gender pay gap, and it is too complicated an issue to be solved with simple policies.
Of Harris’s plan, Goldin said not only would it be nearly impossible to police all companies' pay policies, but that even if it were, companies would still be able to make excuses for discriminatory pay practices in data reports. Emily Martin, vice president for education and workplace justice at the National Women’s Law Center, commends Harris for her creativity in approaching the issue, especially her emphasis on pay transparency among employers, employees, and the public, which she said she feels will give employees more power to advocate for fairer pay.
“Just as paid leave is part of the puzzle in closing the wage gap, so is accessible and affordable child care, and Senator Warren has been a stand out in her work on that issue, including a focus on raising the wages of child care workers—a population that is overwhelmingly women and disproportionately women of color,” Martin said., by ensuring that women and men in her Senate offices are paid equal wages.
