“Behind that smile was a lot of pain,” one former teammate told The Daily Beast after Stanley Wilson Jr.’s sudden death earlier this month.
“He was never a separate entity,” Christoff, a former defensive coordinator and secondary coach for the Stanford Cardinals, told The Daily Beast. “He was always a team player. And the players that were in the defensive backfield [with him] were very fond of him.”

“I think his story is one that is kind of a tale of the time that we grew up in,” he said on Thursday. “Mental health awareness was not as big of an issue… He had a passion for life and he was always a hopeful and optimistic person. It definitely feels like he deserved better.”Wilson’s dad, Stanley Wilson Sr., was a standout running back at Banning High School in the Wilmington section of Los Angeles.
