OAKLAND — What is lost when a sports team jilts a city, leaving a large, empty stadium behind?

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao speaks during a press conference at City Hall in Oakland, Calif., on April 20, 2023. The Oakland A’s have agreed to buy land in Las Vegas and build a new stadium there, team officials confirmed Wednesday. If the A’s do relocate to Las Vegas, the team will once again be neighbors with the Raiders, whose owner Mark Davis isn’t fond of the A’s after the two franchises butted heads while sharing the Coliseum.

With the Warriors and Raiders gone, and the A’s apparently so, Oakland’s major sports landscape is now barren, and the true future of the Coliseum site — awkwardly shared by the A’s and an upstart community group — is hard to predict. Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis poses during a kick-off event celebrating the 2022 NFL Draft at the Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas sign on April 25, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
