OXNARD, Calif. — The Cowboys open the preseason in Denver on Saturday night.How much the starters will play – if at all – has been an eternal debate in NFL circles for early pre-season games. There’s no debate here. The Cowboys coaching staff will use Thursday’s scrimmage at the Broncos practice facility as a chance to sharpen their starters heading into the regular season.on Thursday,’’ head coach Mike McCarthy acknowledged before his team departed for Denver.
McCarthy has not made his intentions for next week’s game against the Chargers known. But indications are he leans toward giving his starters meaningful work in the scrimmages rather than putting them on the field for a series, quarter or half in a preseason games. “Frankly, I just want to see our guys compete. I want to see process, I want to see the pace of operation, I want to see tempo. I want to see the mind speed of our guys, knowing what’s expected of them.
Pace and tempo? McCarthy said it will be faster in Thursday’s scrimmage than it will likely be in Saturday night’s game.
