DJ Khaled on the beauty of watching his son grow:

J Khaled is having a typical Los Angeles morning: After waking up in his home atop Beverly Hills, his personal chef delivers breakfast and a pumpkin latte with almond milk, and Khaled ambles out behind his house to take phone calls poolside. “My backyard is my office,” he says. “I just get a lot done outside.”

As it turns out, there were riches waiting for him in those unfriendly skies. In two years since getting back in the air, Khaled has raked in $67 million, almost double the $39 million he tallied in the two previous years. Much of that haul has come from an uptick in live shows: In 2018, the first full year since his big change, he played 50 gigs, including a stint as the opener for Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s On The Run II Tour.

Khaled remained extremely productive, thanks to studio time on his bus and an incredible work ethic: In his ten-year exile from the skies, he released nine studio albums, all of which landed in the top 15 spots of theBut an artist without direct connection to fans is an artist at risk of losing mass appeal. So the earthbound Khaled made up for it by bringing fans to him via social media, particularly on Snapchat, where he became one of the platform’s most beloved celebrities.

Khaled has had some notable aerial moves in the two years since. In 2018 he played shows in Toronto and Montreal, and returned to Jamaica to finish his latest album,, with local legend Buju Banton, last winter. Of course, his circumstances have changed: These days, he flies private—he prefers the Bombardier Global fleet—and reschedules on a whim if the weather looks iffy.
