Among the many changes the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group made in Year 1 was a restructuring the Broncos' player health and performance setup in pursuit of reducing the team's injury rate.

The day after he fired coach Nathaniel Hackett, Broncos CEO Greg Penner noted multiple areas he and the club’s new ownership group intended to overhaul.

As the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group hits its first anniversary of arriving in Denver on Thursday, Payton is the prize addition and thethe most expensive project to date. The results of those conversations and months of research on the injury front, however, have led to other key changes in the organization.

“The organizations that have done really well tend to have one point person, and that’s where we hired Beau,” Penner said. “That was the big difference, because then you start looking, on a player-by-player basis, across those five things rather than the player goes here and you just look at it this way. …
