As early as the 1940s, Black people in Woodson’s home state of West Virginia. But a national movement for a month-long celebration would continue to bloom where it started — in Chicago.
In the 1930s, Hammurabi traveled to Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe. When an inspired Hammurabi returned to Chicago,in a carriage house, where he hosted lectures and film viewings, sold books, and sought to build both a collection and community for Black history. His work – and his connections between communities and continents – made Chicago’s month-long celebration of Black history an inspiration to Black communities far and near.
