How Alabama is helping Mercedes-Benz move toward an all-electric future.
If one word came up continuously during press events Tuesday for Mercedes-Benz’s new push toward electric SUVs in Tuscaloosa County, it wasIt was a word that Jörg Burzer, member of the Board of Management responsible for production and supply chain, kept returning to in describing Mercedes-Benz’s plan going forward to produce electric SUVs while at the same time offering existing models.
Battery producer Envision AESC, based in Japan, also announced a new partnership with Mercedes-Benz to supply battery cell modules. Burzer said maintaining a flexible assembly line was key to maintaining a well-trained workforce, but also to avoid problems going forward. But flexibility was one of the things Mercedes expected out of its Tuscaloosa workforce, said Michael Göbel, the president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz U.S. International.“Our team members really love to go to Germany, start to work on the new cars, they want to learn, they want to develop themselves...There’s a willingness to do things here you won’t find in many other places,” he said, before using the word “flexibility.” Burzer agreed.
There are other challenges as well. Burzer mentioned one common, not just to automakers, but all business sectors - workforce numbers.Currently, it has 200 employees. Goebel said there’s not a single answer to the dilemma of filling jobs following the worst of the pandemic.
