The jeerers and cheerers of the Dobbs decision in South Bend, Ind., have a onetime neighbor on the Court: Amy Coney Barrett. The ruling — and her role in it — have underscored the growing political chasm between the town and the Notre Dame campus.
Like in many American towns, protestors and celebrants poured into the streets and city plazas of this northern Indiana city in the hours and days after the Supreme Court reversed abortion rights. On Friday evening after thedecision came down, in the John Hunt Plaza in front of the Morris Civic Auditorium, the protesters began hoisting the now-familiar signs: HANDS OFF MY UTERUS. ABORTION IS HEALTHCARE. OUR BODIES OUR CHOICE. KEEP IT LEGAL. KEEP IT SAFE.
The John Hunt Plaza, where South Benders gathered to protest after the Supreme Court released its decision in the Dobbs case on June 24, overturning Roe v. Wade.” and “Touchdown Jesus,” a mural with Christ raising his hands in the air behind the end zone of the football stadium, South Bend exists in the popular imagination as a socially conservative town inseparable from its world-famous Catholic university.
University President Rev. John I. Jenkins, who attended Barrett’s Rose Garden celebration ceremony in September of 2020 and contracted coronavirus in the attendant outbreak, declined an interview with POLITICO but issued a warm but soberthe decision came down. “As a Catholic university, Notre Dame is committed to the sanctity of all human life, and I have for many years joined with others in advocating for the protection of unborn life,” he said.
