National test scores released Monday showed Houston Independent School District test scores dropped in 2022, but were in the middle of the pack nationally compared to school districts in other large cities.

The U.S. Department of Education administers the NAEP every other year to fourth- and eighth-graders across the country. Comparisons can be made among states, as well as among 27 of the country’s largest school districts. Desegregated results from Houston, Austin, Dallas, and Fort Worth ISDs are available, as are state totals. Score range from 0 to 500.

Among the national remedies, Cardona said the U.S. Department of Education will launch a plan to address learning loss, a platform to share best practices and a parent checklist.
