The Houston Police Department reported the death of one of its K-9 officers after he suffered from heat exhaustion in a hot car Monday. Four-year-old Aron served for a year and a half with the department.

According to police, Aron’s handler left him in a running patrol vehicle with air conditioning on. They say “it is a necessary and common practice when the K-9 partner is not actively engaged in police work.” However, the engine shut down, putting Aron in distress. In situations where the car turns off on its own, there’s a system in place that notifies the handler. Officials said a horn goes off, cooling fans are activated and the windows automatically roll down. But that did not happen in Aron’s case.
When the handler returned to find the afflicted Aron without cool air, he was taken to an emergency veterinarian clinic. However, he succumbed to the heat. HPD is investigating the circumstances regarding Aron’s death to discover what went wrong and prevent this from happening again. A vehicle inspection is to be performed on all HPD vehicles that transport K-9s as well.
