The Astros manager, known for rarely losing his cool, was told he'd gone too far in drawing an ejection in ALCS Game 5.
Dusty Baker didn’t need anyone to tell him he’d gone too far when he went off on umpires in the eighth inning of Friday night’s American League Championship Series game. But someone did anyway. Baker’s stepmother gave him a call and started the conversation with, “Johnnie B. Baker …” He visualized her wrinkling her brow and shaking her head in disgust as she said the words.
The show Baker put on before being ejected Friday wasn’t representative of the person he has worked so hard to be. Mr. Nice Guy to those who don’t know him well, Baker has always had a quick temper. He used to fight a lot as a kid growing up in Riverside, Calif., and later when his family moved to Sacramento when he was a teenager. He has made a concerted effort to control that short fuse, even studying relaxation tools so he doesn’t “let the monster out” very often.
