House GOP targets China connections in clean energy spending
, Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-W.V., and Morgan Griffith, R-Va., argued Microvast could present a national security risk due to its operations in China, where foreign companies are often required to share technology with Chinese counterparts.
"The Chinese Communist Party’s laws and regulations require U.S. based businesses operating in China to partner with local Chinese entities, whereby confidential technological and proprietary business information is siphoned to the Chinese Communist Party," they wrote.The majority of world's battery manufacturing runs through China, where the government has moved aggressively to expand the country's clean energy plants.
Since coming into office last year, President Joe Biden's has called for more clean energy manufacturing facilities to be built in the United States, in order to protect against Chinese dominance over the industry and create jobs at home. When Microvast was awarded the $200 million grant in November, Wenjuan Mattis, chief technology officer at the company, said,"this grant will enable Microvast to accelerate its plans to onshore critical battery component manufacturing processes."
