Federal prosecutors say Householder and former Ohio Republican Party Chairman Matt Borges participated in an illegal pay-to-play scheme , trading campaign contributions for a $1.3 billion bailout for two nuclear plants in House Bill 6. Householder and Borges say they did nothing wrong. Householder and Borges are accused of racketeering conspiracy, punishable by up to 20 years in prison. But attorneys for Householder and Borges say they legally participated in the political process.who would back Householder's bid to lead the Ohio House of Representatives. That team received fundraising, polling and messaging help paid for by FirstEnergy and its allies via dark money groups, Wetzel testified.
Wetzel is expected to be on the stand for several days. After Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Glatfelter concludes her initial set of questions, attorneys for Householder and Borges will cross-examine Wetzel's testimony.USA TODAY Network Ohio bureau reporters Jessie Balmert and Laura Bischoff have been following the House Bill 6 scandal since the story broke.
