Hong Kong’s chief executive conceded to one of the five key demands of the protest movement but has ruled out setting up an independent inquiry into claims of police brutality and the misuse of baton charges, tear gas and beanbag rounds. Lam’s statement contained no hint she planned to step down. Reuters had reported earlier this week that Lam had said she wanted to resign in a private meeting with business leaders “For a chief executive to have caused this huge havoc to Hong Kong is unforgivable. It’s just unforgivable. If I have a choice, the first thing is to quit, having made a deep apology, is to step down.”
: “This won’t appease the protesters...in any kind of time, people will find something they can get angry about.”: Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index closed up 3.9% on initial reports of the extradition bill being scrapped, making its biggest daily gain in. The long-running political crisis and protests that ground the city center and airport to a halt at times have weighed heavily on the local economy and businesses.
