As it turns 50, here's a look back at 11 generations of Civic.
1984–1987 Honda Civic Sedan | 3rd Generation
It is with the third-generation Civic that Honda really picks up its reputation for clear, easy-to-use controls and clean, space-efficient interiors. Every third-gen Civic enjoys low cowls, tons of glass area, and intuitive ergonomics. Oh, and the quality of the humble car's assembly, both inside and out, impresses. As evidenced in earlier Civics, the primary controls delight, with a satisfying manual shifter and good pedal and steering feel. The Civic is fun to drive for what it is.
Now consider that this seventh-gen Si is powered by a relatively low-revving, torque-biased 2.0-liter I-4 instead of the previous Si's 1.6-liter, VTEC-addled, high-rpm wailer. It's true that the Si isn't given the more powerful K20A2 that it deserves. But that doesn't take away from the seventh-generation Civic Si having the most torque of any Si to date, even if it would be outperformed in almost every way by its predecessor.
With the return of Acura's Integra, which is based on the 11th-gen Civic, Honda seems intent on metering features between it and the Civic—hence the Si's loss of its adaptive dampers and heated seats. The 5-hp deficit relative to the previous Si is due to minor tuning updates to improve the powerband. The basics remain excellent, however: A limited-slip front differential, sport seats, a firmer suspension, and the only transmission available is a six-speed manual.
