HISD deputy superintendent Rick Cruz is latest senior staffer to depart district ahead of takeover
Rick Cruz, deputy superintendent at HISD, will depart the district this summer following a 15-year career at HISD. He has been selected as the new superintendent for Asheville City Schools in North Carolina.Deputy superintendent Rick Cruz will be leaving Houston ISD this summer for a new role in North Carolina, marking the, according to a press release from the district with roughly 4,300 students.
"I am honored and excited to make Asheville my home, be an active member of its amazing community, and join the remarkable team at Asheville City Schools," Cruz said in a statement released by the district. “I am passionate about working alongside all our stakeholders to ensure that ALL students – regardless of their starting point, background, race, learning disability, or any other circumstances – grow and reach towards their limitless potential.
His departure comes after a 15-year career with the district. Cruz previously oversaw other major departments in HISD, including strategy and innovation, wraparound services and equity, according to HISD. He started his career as a fifth grade bilingual teacher and founded a non-profit that helps low-income students attend top-ranked colleges.
Other departing senior staff include chief of schools Denise Watts and chief talent officer Jeremy Grant-Skinner. HISD police chief Pedro Lopez Jr. will also leave the district to take on a new role leading the Killeen Police Department, although he said his departure from has nothing to do with the [email protected]
