Eagle River residents who live behind the slide path of the avalanche are now able to enter and exit their homes via Hiland Road for the first time in over a week. Read more:
snowmachine shuttle service will be discontinued at the end of the day on Monday as local traffic is now able to use Hiland Road — although the road is only one lane with traffic control flaggers on each side of the avalanche area, so travelers should expect delays.
The municipality is still discouraging people from visiting the site if it’s not necessary, as crews are still actively working to remove snow in the area. Deputy Director of Eagle River Maintenance Mark Littlefield said Monday that anywhere between 26-28 trucks are hauling snow from the slide to a disposal site in Eagle River and that crews are making good time.
“The folks that are living down South River fortunately had blazed a trail through the woods,” Littlefield said. “... That’s why we decided to open up Hiland first to where those folks that haven’t had access, got access to their homes.”Copyright 2022 KTUU. All rights reserved.
