San Bernardino Mountains residents trapped in the lowlands since waves of winter storms rolled through more than a week ago are now able to return home — without an escort, Caltrans announced Monday afternoon.
Roads reopened without escorts to residents at 4 p.m. March 6. Chains are only required for Highway 138, Caltrans officials said, however they suggest chains be carried in all vehicles driving to the mountains, as a precaution against changing weather conditions.
