Lead paint concerns have arisen at CPS' McClellan Elementary School in Bridgeport after high levels of the element were found.
The mother of two children who survived lead poisoning is sharing the effects after they were exposed to lead paint in their Chicago area apartment.Parents and teachers at a Bridgeport elementary school say that Chicago Public Schools delayed for months testing that last week found high levels of lead in three rooms, including a special education classroom.
"We are taking this situation extremely seriously," McClellan Principal Carrie Ann Cole wrote in a letter to parents last week. In a statement, the district, said it acted quickly to test for lead last week and denies that there was any foot-dragging. One parent with a physically disabled child said the problem is extremely stressful as she worries about her son's health.
Koren Stewart is going to get her twin daughters and son to a doctor for blood tests. The twins, both special education students in the seventh grade, have been sick for months, she said. They were both in one of the classrooms with the high lead levels. Her son is in fifth grade.
