OLYMPIC weightlifting champion Hidilyn Diaz has proven once again that she is a force to be reckoned with when she snagged another gold medal at the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam on Friday, May 20, 2022.
Diaz won in the women's 55-kilogram category, the same weight class she won the Philippines' first gold medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.Tanasan, who snagged gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics women's 48kg, set a SEA Games record in snatch with 93kg. Diaz tried to lift 94kg, but failed in her third attempt.
Tanasan intially lifted 104 and 110 kg in the clean and jerk to take the lead with 203kg, but Diaz carried 114kg in her first effort to gain the upper hand. Tanasan attempted, but failed, to bear the same weight in her final try.The Zamboanga-native is a gold medalist in the 2019 SEA Games in Manila and a bronze medalist in the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand.
Diaz wrote history for Philippine sports after she won the country's first-ever Olympic gold medal in Tokyo after conquering the women's 55kg weightlifting when she lifted an Olympic record of 224 kilograms. She also won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics that ended the 20-year medal drought of the country.
Diaz has since received several incentives and rewards for being the country's first Olympic gold medalist.SunStar website welcomes friendly debate, but comments posted on this site do not necessarily reflect the views of the SunStar management and its affiliates.
