Hezbollah-Israel conflict could trigger wider Mideast war
HAMAS and Hezbollah are two militant organizations that were never really dancing partners, so to speak. Their differences have deep ideological roots. Hamas is a Sunni 'resistance movement' that is an offshoot of the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood. Hezbollah prides itself as the Shiite, 'the party of God,' and has established a stronghold in Lebanon. If there is a common thread running through these two groups, it is their fierce enmity toward Israel.
Since then, however, the geopolitical dynamic of the region has dramatically shifted.Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has enunciated that there will be no truce in Gaza until Hamas is wiped out. US President Joe Biden has given up keeping Netanyahu on a leash and has promised to keep military aid flowing into Israel. That didn't sit well with US allies, which have been desperately pushing for a truce to save the people of Gaza from a humanitarian disaster.
