The leading candidates appear to be Blackmon and. Adofo-Mensah drafted Booth Jr. with the No. 42 overall selection in last year’s 2022 NFL Draft. But Booth Jr. played just 105 defensive snaps before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Booth’s play left plenty to be desired, albeit through a small sample size.
Booth Jr. allowed 13 receptions on 15 targets en route to earning a lackluster coverage grade of 41.7 from Pro Football Focus. Opposing quarterbacks enjoyed a passer rating of 108.9 when targeting Booth Jr. in coverage. Each reception Booth Jr. allowed went for a chain-moving 11.7 yards per catch. Booth Jr. isn’t going to be handed a starting gig, especially under a new play-caller in Flores. It’ll be an even battle between Booth Jr. and Blackmon throughout training camp. Blackmon has the momentum of being a fresh addition.
The Vikings will field a new-look defense in 2023. A new defensive coordinator and revamped secondary is at the forefront of the sweeping changes. Analysis of the depth chart indicates Blackmon possesses every opportunity necessary to develop into an immediate starter in Minnesota.
