Entering turn three, he grabs fifth gear and stays full throttle. Driver Daniel Suarez was a guest on Race Hub and noted that Chastain was the only driver to even use fifth around Martinsville—normally, the entire race is done with just third and fourth gear.
Chastain hits the wall at 130 mph, at which point the data indicating his speed gets all wacky as he wheelspins around the corner. His steering trace goes totally dead around the wall, too, Chastain only adding inputs once he's straightened out. He doesn't lift until he crosses the finish line, his hail-mary proven effective. Suarez says the only thing Chastain didn't do was close his eyes while riding the wall.
It was a leap-of-faith, and one that required full commitment. To everyone's astonishment, perhaps even Chastain's own, it worked.
