Kids are already vulnerable to developing eating disorders.
reached out for a statement on the issues with encouraging kids to diet, WW responded with the following:
Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century and one in three children aged 5-17 have overweight or obesity in the US. There is a clear need for a scalable, family-based program designed specifically for youth that encourages them to choose healthy foods and understand the importance of physical activity and mindfulness.
The launch of Kurbo by WW is about helping the whole family put healthier habits in place. It was developed with counsel from our Youth and Family Advisory Board - a distinguished group of 24 leaders in pediatric health and nutrition across seven countries. Kurbo is a scientifically-proven family-based behavior change program designed to help kids and teens reach a healthier weight. Derived from Stanford University's program, Kurbo uses the Traffic Light food system, which is backed by 30 years of research and is one of the most effective and well-researched tools for helping kids and teens learn healthy eating habits.
While there’s nothing wrong with promoting eating nutritious foods and exercising, both of which have numerous physical and mental health benefits, I think instilling a diet-centered mindset among youth, who are already vulnerable to disordered eating, could be dangerous. Companies like WW would do better to focus on helping youth with real problems, like the mental health crisis. As it stands, I worry they’re just making it worse.
