When the library opened Reagan said he’d “seen the world turned upside down and conventional wisdom utterly disproved.”
In November of 1991 five living American presidents gathered together for the first time in history to honor the opening of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, encircled by mountains, valleys and breathtaking views.
Here is a look at the museum’s history along with a glimpse of recent appearances by GOP candidates and others atSitting on a 300-acre site of rolling hills and canyons, the Reagan Library opened on Nov. 4, 1991 after Stanford University refused to build a Reagan library on its campus in Palo Alto. He added, “Visitors to this mountaintop will see a great jagged chunk of the Berlin wall, hated symbol of, yes, an evil empire, that spied on and lied to its citizens, denying them their freedom, their bread, even their faith. Well, today that wall exists only in museums, souvenir collections and the memories of a people no longer oppressed. It is also a reminder that a strong America is always desirable — and necessary in our world.
Former President Carter, who was outnumbered by his conservative fellow presidents, teased his colleagues, saying, “You all have another advantage over me. At least all of you have met another Democratic president. I’ve never had that opportunity yet.” The third Republican presidential candidates’ debate was held in 2011. “We have established a wonderful tradition — of which I know Ronnie would be so proud — of using the Library as a first-in-the-nation forum for candidates to introduce themselves and their visions for America to a national audience,”Eleven Republican candidates took to the podium in 2015 for a debate including Donald Trump, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Gov.
