Not to mention the support of her actual family. Last summer, Obiri relocated to Boulder and her family—husband Tom Nyaundi and—joined her in the spring of 2023. She says she loves having them close by, and they’ve been enjoying the new city. “[My family] gives me a lot of support during my training,” she says. “And when you are here with your family, you get that extra motivation because your family is watching you training and watching you compete. She loves the energy of the fans, and she’s familiar with the course at this point.
Obiri isn’t shy about her long-term goal. Despite being one of the most decorated track runners of the century, an Olympic gold medal has eluded her throughout her career. She’s come close: silver in the 5,000 meters in Rio, silver in the 5,000 meters in Tokyo. “The only medal I’m missing is Olympic gold,” Obiri says. “I’ve been getting silver, so I do want to work hard so that I can upgrade my silver into a gold.
