Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire relaunched Star Wars' Expanded Universe back in 1991, and gradually so many aspects of the story have become part of the Disney canon. Star Wars has always been a transmedia franchise, with the first tie-in comics and books published well before The Empire Strikes Back.
The Disney canon Thrawn was lost in the Unknown Regions after falling prey to a trap by Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger. The Mandalorian season 2 teased his return five years after the events of Return of the Jedi . Thrawn appears to be avoiding the politics of the Imperial Shadow Council, although he's clearly accumulating military resources ahead of a major push. It will be exciting to see what the future has in store for Grand Admiral Thrawn.
7 Rukh And The Noghri Were Canonized In Star Wars Rebels Heir to the Empire introduced a race known as the Noghri, tricked into serving the Empire. Zahn actually originally intended these to be the Sith, given Lucas had revealed nothing about the Sith bar declaring Darth Vader their Dark Lord. The most prominent of the Noghri was Thrawn's own bodyguard, Rukh, and he appeared in Star Wars Rebels .
5 Star Wars Has Confirmed An Heir To The Empire Plot Point - A Potential Luke Skywalker Clone One of the strangest twists in Zahn's Thrawn trilogy came in the final book, The Last Command, which revealed Palpatine had successfully acquired Luke Skywalker's severed hand from The Empire Strikes Back - and used it to create a clone.
