Heidi Klum sits down with PEOPLE StyleWatch to walk through her iconic Halloween costumes throughout the years. From learning to walk on stilts to sitting through hours of prosthetics, Klum has done it all for her iconic Halloween party.

Klum kicked off her epic streak of iconic Halloween costumes in 2000. At her inaugural Halloween party, Klum dressed up as Heidi, a character from Johanna Spyri’s German novels about a young girl living in the Swiss alps. Klum made the dirndl fit for a supermodel by creating the look in patent leather.Back then, Klum says she did her hair and makeup herself. In the years since, Klum’s preparation has only intensified.
The costume was partly in response to people asking Klum if she still wanted to model at 40, seemingly questioning whether she thought she was too old to continue her career.“I thought, yeah, 40… that’s old. Old… I wanna be old!” Klum recalls. She was no ordinary 90-year-old, though. Dolled up in a vintage Chanel dress and flats, Klum calls herself a “chic old lady.”
The costumes are not without sacrifice, though. “I think some chunk of my own skin went off by ripping this off,” Klum recalls of the two-hour getting unready process.
