The aircraft was located just after 9 a.m. Wednesday by civil authorities near the mountain community of Pine Valley, about a 45-mile drive from San Diego but rescue crews said snowy conditions were making access challenging on the ground.

Rescuers were battling heavy snow Wednesday to reach a Marine Corps helicopter carrying five troops that went down in a mountainous area outside San Diego.

The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing is leading rescue operations, but multiple agencies — like the U.S. Forest Service — are helping with the effort.“It's very steep, very high mountains out here. So you have valleys and ridges that go for days and days,” Judy said. “Then you throw some clouds on top of that and then some rain — it can be very dangerous to see some of these areas as well. Not just flying through, but also driving through.

The five U.S. Marines were assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Miramar, the Marine Corps said in a statement. No further details about the state of the helicopter or marines has been shared as of Wednesday afternoon. President Joe Biden was briefed on the missing Marines, said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who answered questions as the president flew to New York City for campaign fundraisers.
